while I was on vacation in Mexico, my hair was so nice. Curly and bouncy and I loved it. My dry/itchy scalp issue was not a problem! I call it beach hair but it happens when I go camping too. Anyway I was trying to figure out a way to get that hair when I'm home and ran across more than a few websites praising the "no shampoo" method. After reading up on it a bit I have decided to do it! Theory is that all the chemicals in shampoo strip you hair of its natrual oils and ruin it causing your scalp to try and compensate by producing more oil than nessasary, which makes you want to wash your hair again and so on in an endless cycle. So I looked at my shampoos, they all have the worst offendors in them , so I threw them out and have decided to try and go "no poo". I'm on day 4. I washed as usual on monday. I usually wash every other day and by the second day its usally pretty greasy/itchy and i can't wait to wash it! So last night I did the "no poo" wash using bakind soda and water Scrubing thourouly with my fingers (not nails) rincing and then doing a rinse with apple cider vinegar(i added a few drops of lavender oil too) I am amazed this morning! My hair is not greasy at all! it doesn't itch, I dont even have the dry scalp issues I usually do by the second day. its not the same as it is when I use shampoo though, its not a squeaky clean feeling, but clean none the less. Its kinda wierd. haha. Anyway I think it looks a little more curly too. I'm a little apprehensive since your hair is supposed to freak out for about 8 weeks before it realizes it doens't have to produce as much oil and settles down again. All the website disucssions say to be prepared to wear a hat for a while till it balences itself. Then as a few of the others put it, it suddenly looks fabulous. I'm going to try to find some good homemade conditioner recipes... I'll keep you ladies updated!

This all sounds so cool! I want to try it!
cspoti, do you use a baking soda method? I have a coworker that literally just rinses with water and that's it.

Do keep us posted! I'm absolutely fascinated by the thought of not using shampoo!!! I'm such a priss though, I know I would freak out during the adjustment period. I will literally have to not have shampoo in the house to not breakdown and wash!

For me personally, I could not go without shampoo. I love the way it makes my hair smell. But I think it is the quality of the shampoo that matters. Aveda is one of the better ones, IMHO. To spend $20 on a bottle of shampoo makes all of the difference in terms of the health of your hair. I would try anything once, so I am going to give the baking soda a try

What is the ratio used for the bakingsoda and water?
For your curly girls there is a great book out there called Curly Girl The author talks about the no-poo and how it's great for girls with wavy to "kinky" type hair. It also has some good recipes for hair care....
I have not heard of using apple cider vinigar as a rinse..I will have to try it!

1 tbsp per 8 oz of water. Today I made up little baking soda balls with a little honey in them and left them to dry. It might be easier to take one in of those into the shower rather than mixing it up everytime. Today I put in some jojoba oil with abit of lavender and rosemary on my hair. it smells great, but i thinnk next time I will have to use a little less b/c it made it look stringy, so I rubbed oat meal in it and then brushed it out so it looks alot better now.I may have to do a baking soda wash tonight to get it out. lol Still no dry scalp though! still no itch!
