There are always lots of questions about moving stones around in various heads so I put together this short article to try to explain some of the more common issues when trying to do this..

If I can answer in more detail, or you want to know more, please ask and I'll answer and expand on the article..

Thanks Steve! I LOVE stuff like this! I wish sometimes I could go and work with jewelry in making a repaing it..I have always loved working and fixing things.

My Dad used to make jewelry and really misses it...so it's in the blood.

Great explanation, Steve. Thanks for taking the time to educate us. I love the technical side of jewelry creation as much as I do the creative side.

I'm not sure if this was asked before, how do I correctly measure the prongs in order to figure out the ideal size stone that should fit in the setting?

In a perfect world I can take a stone and set it upside down on the bench.. Then take the new head and press it over the stone, pick up the head and the stone stays in the head..

Most heads can be adjusted in our out slightly, especially tiffany style heads, to make the fit perfect..

And now the short answer..

Measure the inside to inside edge of the prongs and they should be nearly the safe as the diameter of the stone..

Steve, thanks so much for sharing your excellent tutorial!

May I 'sticky' this thread here for readily available future reference?
