Threw my back out - what works?

This has never happened to me before...My sacrum had hurt a bit on and off the past week or so, but just stiffness - then I literally had just put my stuff in the car for a wedding and just buckled over - fortunately FH was with me. I saw stars and just hung on to the car for a few minutes, then was able to get in the car. yeah, I had to go - too short notice to get anyone to fill in my place, but driving and playing were totally fine. No problems sitting down at all, the issue is standing and walking!
I was still moderately okay at the wedding and after, then when I got home realized I could barely move...I can do a weird downward dog shuffle on my hands and feet that doesn't hurt but I look like those awful Wheelies from Ozma of Oz... and FH says I'll traumatize the kids if they see me like this.
He's gone out to get some heat patches and crutches so I can hobble around, but wth?! How long does this pain last? Ice or heat - or alternate? Massage or chiro or MD, and make myself move or rest? I'm off to the ER if it's like this tomorrow. Dunno what to do if my sitter is booked Monday. I'm lying on the bed now, laptop, phone and tv remotes at hand - and there's no pain as long as I'm completely flat on my stomach or my back but then I forget and move and it gets me!

Hi Merricks-girl
Having inherited a bad back from both of my parents, I can literally say that I feel your pain! It is funny how it often doesn't happen immediately, sometimes it can be delayed as much as 24 hours. Last time it did for me, it was getting stiffer and stiffer until I literally froze up and had to slowly lay down on my tile floor for at least an hour until I could hobble to bed. It took at least a day until I got some mobility back, and after a few days it still hurt, but then again, it almost always hurts.
Lots of rest is the key. Ibuprofen (i.e. Advil) is perfect for back pain, and heat pads seem to help. But the true healing comes from the rest. If you have a pool, wading in the pool will also help.
If possible, I am not sure how you can position yourself to type without flexing your back muscles (but, of course, giving up posting for a few days might be out of the question )

I have a bad back issue from an injury when I was 18 (i was a stupid kid) , for me it tends to be a muscle spasm that sets it off, so again for me, a heating pad works and resting it along with some great muscle relaxers to ease the spasm out. Hang in there I know it's rough and feels awful.

I also have a bad back, and have had this happen. The advice you have been given is great!! LOTS of rest. And I would team the heat with ice packs. This is what my doctor has always told me. To alternate.
