Neti pot
Has anyone used one of these? I recently bought one because I have year-round allergies, and I was tired of suffering. I have used it four times, and it seems as though every time I feel more pressure in my sinuses instead of less. The post-nasal drip seems to be subsiding, but there's a good bit of pain that wasn't there before. Also, I have a sore throat that usually only comes when I'm having a particularly bad allergy attack. Maybe I'm getting sick, but it's been like this for three days without it turning into a cold. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

I used it once and didn't like the feeling. I've been too chicken to try it again.

ok I want to clarify...I have not used the neti pot but I have previously had a deviated septum for years and did many things to help it out before I had surgery. I don't want anyone to think that I have "experience" snorting things up my nose! LOL

LOL. Don't worry, I know what you mean. It felt like when I was a kid and I would do flips in the pool. It's not the best feeling in the world, but I got through it. It's just that I can't seem to decide if it's making me feel better or worse. I am breathing more easily, but at the same time, I feel more pressure in my sinuses. It's a very weird sensation..

I have one, which I have used about 3 times. Last time, I experienced a similar sinus pressure. Imagine my shock when a little while later, when I flipped my head over to start drying my hair, water came POURING out of my nose. I guess I just hadn't gotten it all out. Once that happened, I felt a ton better.
Maybe you could try that and see what happens? Good luck!

Yeah, Lily, that's what I was thinking. I've been feeling icky for a while, so it may be a coincidence. And I do keep snorting the water because I try to hold my breath. Maybe there's some sloshing around in my brain. I did use non-iodized salt.. 1/4 tsp per cup of filtered water. LOL, the more I think about this, the sillier it seems! BF insisted on watching me the first time so he could get a good laugh. I had to sit on the side of the tub so I couldn't see him laughing.. I would have snorted the entire thing, I know.

I have heard that if you have an sinus infection, (or the beginning of one), that it could be painful. Also if you are unable to blow your nose, because you are so stuffed up, you should not use a netipot.
After you are done using the netipot you should blow through both of your nostrils at the same time while being sure to not close off your nostrils as you blow so you can expel the excess solution and mucus, or you could bend forward to help "drain" the solution from your nasal passages.
I have not used it yet but dh did this weekend as he was having a bad allergy attack. He was not for it but finally he was desperate for some relief so he said for me to go get my magic voodoo pot I have been to chicken to try! Rotflol! It did give him some temporary relief. I think it works better as a preventive measure, like using it everyday to prevent the allergy problems.
You do have to relax and breath through your mouth. Dh was getting water in his mouth at first then we realized he need to be looking straight down into the sink and then tilt his head to the side, that way you are keeping your forehead at the same angle as your chin and remember move the pot to pour the water not your head. LOL dh would get the perfect angle but then start moving his head when pouring the water! He did great after a few tries though, it just takes practice.
