I bought a 3-stone moissanite from Ebay for an amount which is, for me, a significant amount. I liked the setting (trellis/lucern) and the fact that it was used, for various reasons including the situation I would be wearing it in!

However, 1) the stones are ridiculously green/yellow. 2) On top of that, I'll have to size it, which I knew before, but thought it was more than worth it as I was expecting a wearable, even pretty, ring. 3) The setting's condition is pretty bad (despite the seller's somewhat misleading description...) which is OK for me, but means any resale would be difficult, probably means bad feedback, etc. 4) It's dirty, which doesn't make much difference, but annoys me.

I have no interest in passing anything off as diamonds. But nor am I interested in sullying the reputation of moissanite! In fact I love telling anyone who asks about alternatives (and vintage jewelry - and hopefully encouraging people to wear both).

I like pale yellow and pale green, and even pale grey, but this color somehow combines the worst of all three! I have no idea how she got the picture to show them as a decent color. I really don't think it was photoshop!

The sale was final. And did I mention it was FILTHY?

The total weight is 1 carat, apparently. The center stone is 5mm and the sides are 4mm, all rounds.

ANYWAY. I want to think of something to do with it for the least possible cost. Adding new stones to the setting is actually likely to be pretty costly, so I'd need to use the cheapest stones and jewelers possible. What would you do?

1) replace the center stone with something bright that might just look nice next to 'warm' / borderline yellow sidestones, or make them look as if they're meant to be fancy light yellow or something. This might look OK - the side stones aren't so bad. It's just the triple whammy of ugliness, you know? Consider replacing the sidestones later. The cheapest option. Also pay to get it sized.

2) Re-sell it on Ebay, being very honest about the color and condition, and take the inevitable loss. Lose no more money, and learn the lesson of not believing the description or buying anything without very good pictures. Lose about $150 or more, up to probably about half the ring's value. Don't pay to get it sized.

3) Replace all three stones and wear it as planned. Also pay to get it sized. (The most expensive option. If anyone has any ideas about how to do that for less than about $150, which I really resent spending on this ring, I'd love to hear them. I own a couple of options in these size stones, and don't mind buying more stones, but I resent spending that much on setting and sizing for a white elephant, you know?)

Thanks for reading this far! Oh, well, at least I have found I like the lucern setting, and that 1 carat in a 3-stone is nice on my hand.

if you don't have gemcare, as least soak it in dishwashing liquid and take a toothbrush to it. If they are moissy's, you aren't going to hurt them.

yep...i still clean my rings dishwashing liquid soap and a toothbrush. you can wet a toothbrush and dip it into some baking soda and scrub the ring. it won't hurt it, either. i used to do that before i found gemcare.

same here - now I have gemcare, but before I got spoiled, I used the vinegar windex (thanks to someone's advise on here) for a quicky clean and the toothbrush route for more detailed cleaning.

Heh. Ah, how nice it is to see such quick, concerned responses! Thank you thank you!! I knew people here would understand how I felt! Yes, I've soap-and-toothbrushed it, and it's at least not a health hazard any more. (Did the seller not know about basic hygiene, I wonder?! I just can't imagine letting anything out of my house in that state! I don't have a way of cleaning them to the standards of a 'real' jewelry fiend, but at least it no longer has actual gunk on it... that's the bare minimum I expect, really!)

Just uploading pictures.... just had to vent first!
