First off let me say thanks to all of you. I was so very close to ordering from DNL, too bad I already wasted $25 on their dream book. Anywho I just don't know where to start. I thought my dream ring was a princess cut solitaire but after seeing all of your beautiful rings I think I like the cushion now. I am worried though if I get a cushion I'll still want the princess. My other concern is where and what type of setting to get. I'd like stones on the sides like a pave, I love dm3's setting from van graffe with the regence cut stone but will it look good on me? I also like the cartier repro with maybe a cushion, does anyone have pics???? On the other hand maybe just a simple pave with a princess??? How do I decide and do i start with a stone or a setting? Also, if i find a setting I like how hard and or expensive is it to change the head if it is made for say a round and I want a cushion or princess or cc princess? and how much is it for just general setting? Thanks in advance and you all have very beautiful rings. I have been on this site 24/7 for the last couple of days.

First of all, welcome!

I would recommend ordering loose stones in princess and cushion so you can look at them side by side. I did this when I was trying to decide between flanders and cushion. I ended up keeping the cushion, but it was a hard decision. They were both incredible.

As for a setting, it's probably best to figure out a budget first, because you can find settings anywhere between $100 (maybe less if you are getting something pre-owned on Diamond Bistro) to many thousands of $$. I would go to a few jewelry stores in your area and try on different rings to try and figure out what you like, then you can find it for less on the internet!

Good luck and have fun!

welcome to the boards, wnydapoo (hahah winnie the pooh? ;\) )

+1 to jenny. the best way to figure out what you like is to look at both stones side by side. as for settings, there are LOTS of places you can get them from. ;\) trying on rings is the best way to see what you like and what looks good on your finger.

Here are some Cartier Repro photos. I think one set of photos has a cushion center?

http://picasaweb.google.com/BTDpast/Cartier1895Repro

I think it's easier to order a stone to fit a setting you love rather then find a setting after buying the stone. It always seems when you already own the stone, you don't like any settings, or they aren't available for the right center stone size, etc. It is not such a problem if the setting is a peg head style so you can switch heads, but if not, then you won't have much if any leeway for different shapes or stone sizes. But even with peg heads, there has to be some thought given to the finished look because significantly changing the center stone shape or size (like going from a .50 round to a 3 carat cushion) can change the whole look of a ring.

Given a choice, I prefer integrated heads over peg heads. And with integrated heads, you don't have the leeway on stone shapes/sizes so it'd be important to choose the setting first, then order the appropriate stone. You might not feel that way but since you are so undecided on the setting, keeping as many options open as possible while searching is always a good thing.

If you are unsure about stone shape, how about contacting Winfields and asking them to send you a few stones in the princess and cushion shapes to look at? They don't have to be the size you want, just samples you can look at to see cutting styles. You might have to pay postage both ways, but it's certainly cheaper than buying a stone that might not ultimately work for the setting you choose.

Welcome and good luck!

I would definitely get some of the stones to see which shape you like best. You can even order a stone holder so you can see how the shape looks on your finger.

Welcome to the boards! So nice to meet you. Have fun! \:\)

Welcome, wnydapoo!

Man oh man are you in for a ride! This is quite a process and you will probably change your mind a million times, so don't think that you are insane when you do...we have all been through it...and probably more than once. ;\)

I agree that you should find the setting that you like first. It is much easier to match a stone to a setting than the other way around. Post some pics or links to some ideas of what you might like, the girls around here have endless links that might be exactly what you want but never found on your own. \:\)

And after you find the setting you like definitely order a couple different stones to see what shape is for you.

Personally, I am a cushion addict. \:\) and the cushion in the Cartier setting (with the pave) is to die for ! I have been wanting one like crazy, but I have too many rings already. \:\( Someone does have one with a cushion in it...I will go hunt down the thread with the pics.

What carat weight are you looking to get?
