First I went to David's Bridal, but didn't fall in love with anything. Then I went to Macy's Bridal Salon, and found my dress there. I bought a dress from nordstrom.com in between, but wound up returning it. Good luck in your search.

If you are looking for a great deal.... then you really should check out Davids Bridal.
My sister in laws wedding is coming up May 16th. My Father in Law gave me the money for the dress undergarments shoes and head pieces... ( veil tiara ect.... )
She got such a terrific deal... Her dress was a desinger gown that first cost was over 2000 dollars, she got it something like half off. Then her Cathedral length swarovoski crystal veil, finger tip veil that is also edged in swarvoski crystals, her swarovoski crystal tiara, and blusher was just alittle over a 1000 dollars... then her shoes and undergarments...Her total cost before any discounts was around 3500 counting her shoes and bag... she ended up getting it all for like 1600!!!! Now that was a deal!!!!
I have to say.... my FIL has told everyone that I have her dressed like a princess on a price that HE agreed with!!! LOL!

That is a great point, Nabi! You could have an original made for you and enjoy the process! I did make my own, and it cost me almost 100 dollars in silks. Also, figure in that if the shop orders your gown, they will order it in a size closest to your measurements, but almost always a size larger. Which means expensive alterations! I cannot tell you how many brides have called me begging for me to alter a gown with beading and many many layers because they could not afford the alterations the shop was billing them for. Average alterations are around $250, depending upon locale, design and fabrication. You also could ask when they are having a sample sale, because you can also get great deals that way.
Congratulations! Enjoy this time!

I got mine at david's bridal on black friday and it cost me $350 plus tax when reg price was $1200 (oleg cassini)
sample sales are always best and u could also perhpaps get a used or brand new but never used (for several reasons) thru the internet? there was this website where I looked AFTER buying mine and they had the SAME dresses I had seen at other places for cheaper!

oh, and I know Wench is the expert here but just to let u know, the top part of my dress had tons of beading and david's bridal wanted to charge me around $200 for the alteration because the dress was a size 6 and I'm a size 2 (although I can wear a 4 and don't need alteration)
anyway, I ended up altering the dress for only $50 and all the lady had to do was make the back part (zipper part) smaller and put a ribbon on the back to not show the part that would go inwards from altering about 6 inches of the dress (or so, not sure how much)
IF you are ok with having a ribbon in the back then it can be done VERY easily and you don't need to spend TONS of money on TOP of your dress for it to fit great.
hope this helps
