I've been thinking about adopting a pet for a while, at my last apt. I wasn't allowed dogs, but here they're allowed!!

I've been researching breeds and had decided on a Pomeranian (My dad has a pom, it's SO precious, and a smart little thing too!)

I was browsing my local SPCA site (I don't trust getting pets anywhere else, apparently puppy mills are a huge problem in quebec) and the petfinder/adoption website and I think I've found the perfect little dog.. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=14914115

I sent them an email to see if she is still up for adoption and to see if I can go visit her. She's the sweetest little thing I've ever seen <3

Does anyone have any advice in regards to small dogs? I work from home so I know I have a LOT of time to spend with a pet, I have time for walks every day too. There is a lot of room in our apt. for her toys and bed as well! I can definitely afford her vaccinations and vet checkups.. am I forgetting anything??

Gosh I hope she is still available, I think I'm in love with her already!!

I have 3 Pomeranian's. All 3 of them are VERY smart, the 2 younger ones are chewing on everything they can find. (The dog you're looking at is 1yr so you shouldn't have to worry about that too much.) Keep lots of chew toys around. I have to run right now but I'll be back on later. Here's the link to my thread about Ruby and her puppies. (If you care) lol. \:D

I worked at an animal shelter and a specialized small dog/teacup dog store and I have one huge advice point for you...

If you are planning on having kids, some women don't, then do not get a small dog or one that is prone to become jealous and attached, such as a Pom, until you have a child and your last child is over 5 years of age. Little dogs, especially those who become attached, tend to get jealous very easily and even smother babies.

Please notice the note in the petfinder information: So kids over 7 would be great!

This is the age range they give when a pom, or this dog, won't be jealous anymore.

If you would like more information, or even different small breeds who are better with babies and small children (there are some) feel free to PM me or ask on here.

But I would recommend NOT getting a Pom if you plan on having babies within the next 8-10 years. I've seen many small dogs go to the animal shelter after fits of jealousy and anger. \:\(

Also when I looked at the list of all pets available to see what else the shelter had, possibly for a recommendation for you, I noticed that she clearly has a no kids sign...

That's a big thing to think about!

Jsmith, thank you for the tip!! I don't plan on babies any time soon. I'm 22 and not planning on kids until 30-35~ so I think a pom would be perfect!

Do you think it would be OK if children were around though? I have a 2yr old baby sister and sometimes I like to visit my mom and sis, would it be safe to bring the doggy, I wonder? If not I could leave her home with FH. (I don't go very often so I can't see it being a problem)

I would also suggest taking with your baby sister (2 years old) with when you meet the puppy and see how Candie responds to her. That's the only way to really know if Candie will be okay when your sister visits in the future.

Thanks so much for your help Jsmith!! I responded to your PM~

Luckily FH and I lead pretty kid-free lives (and don't plan on having our own for a good while)

When you go to the shelter they will, most likely, discuss this topic with you especially if she is a dog in fact that does not deal well with children like it is listed on her profile. They will talk freely about this with you.
