He's such a sweet guy. Been in business since the mid-70s, first selling gemstone beads and such from India and Asia here in the states, then has had his own shop selling jewelry. He has a very small, one man operation, and needs some holiday help. His health hasn't been very good. And since the economy has been in such a slump, he really wants some ideas on how to better present his business and merchandise to the community. He wants me to help him with presentation, developing a strategy to crack into newer markets (which for him means email listings and weekly specials).

He's asked me what kind of compensation I would like, hourly? commission? project based?

I'd love input on what you think would attract customers into a small shop, with decent location but very little current word-of-mouth reputation. Prices are VERY good compared to other local (higher scale) or chain stores. I think the niche would be "Personality Pieces" created with stones he has in stock (the mind boggles!) or semi-custom using commercial mounts.

Please give me some suggestions!

That opportunity sounds wonderful, Uppy.

If you have a relationship with a hair salon, day spa, ladies tennis group, etc., you could ask if you could distribute a VIP special invitation only for that particular group offering 10% off. Maybe even offer to buy their client list. Then hold a small "party" night for that group at his store.

Or you could bring some of his inventory to the hair salon, day spa, ladies tennis group since you'd already have built-in traffic (preferrably with money!). The only thing with this is checking if insurance would cover security and travel while the goods were in transit or out of his shop. This was done at my former hair salon and displayed beautifully at the front of the store. They invited clients of the salon to a private viewing party. The jewelry wasn't high end but it was expensive costume and it was a nice turnout. Both the salon and the store jointly provided refreshments and appetizers.

MGR, what an awesome idea!!

The only suggestion I have is to make sure he is on google maps and has a good website, everyone I know uses google maps religiously to find the closest anything and everything. \:D

He has NO online presence at all. One of the things he wants me to do is to set up an email list along with promotional mailings.

Ohhhhh how wonderful for you!!! You are going to do an amazing job at helping him increase business!!! I agree with the "party" idea. Offer certain groups 10% off (or whatever he is comfortable with) and make a night of it. It's a great way to spread the word about his business and to get new people into his store. Word of mouth is the best advertisement there is!! Print out flyers, etc. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I have a suggestion. \:\) Try going over the list of buying customers in the past 6 months and offer them 10% off any one item good for the next 3 months. Call them or email them. That would work for me. However, I do not like being called and offered a discount for a certain week or weekend though. I figure the seller has raised their prices during that time period (sorry, I am jaded). Also, the young people love Tiffany. Any reproductions I think would do well. Next suggestion, is to list his prices so they are easily seen. No one does this and it irks me. I know that there must be a sales reason for this, but it just turns me off totally.

Uppy, I am sure you can do an amazing job for your jeweler. Good luck!

No online presence?? Ack! Young people live on the internet, I only go to places listed on google maps, or places I've walked by while going to places on google maps LOL. My mom laughs at me for this. When FH and I moved we had to wait a little bit for the internet... we were so lost.

I'm sure you will do an awesome job!!
